Cyberoptics

OMFC was on-site and in effect for Indianapolis-based IndyMojo.com’s annual music festival, MojoStock 2011.  OMFC Intern, Scott Stilson was able to sit down with California-via-Memphis based Dubstep/Lazerbass producer, Alex Epps, aka Cyberoptics. Cyberoptics hit the scene hard in 2010 with wonky filth-grinder, “Geisha”, a track that has since proven to be influential in the development of this new and experimental genre. The Cyberoptics sound is at times understated, at others on complete knob-to-eleven blast, incorporating lovely samples and leads to contrast filth with beauty, hands-in-air atmospheric sweeps with booty-dropping sub bass. Clearly a talented up-and-comer within basshead circles, Epps’ take on what many deem to be a stagnate genre may help revitalize the realm of truly hard, filthy dubstep.

OMFC: Your set melted the crowd tonight, how do you want your music to make your fans feel?

Epps: I like to feel the music I make personally. I use themes in my tracks, like in “Kong” and “Geisha”. I want my music to give you a mental picture, to get you into an intense visual mode.

OMFC: Live music is about the fans, how do you give back to your fans?

Epps: The more I can relate to them the better, I always try to respond to facebook posts as quickly as possible… I want them to spread the word that I just wanna be cool and make tracks.

OMFC: Your career is really building momentum, where do you want you music to take you?

Epps: I actually don’t want to be a DJ forever. I really want to make music for video games and movies. I want to be like Daft Punk in Tron.

OMFC: What other artists inspire you?

Epps: Liquid Stranger, Downlink, MLK, Charlie Clouser

OMFC: What large venue do you one day want to play?

Epps: I definitely want to do Starscape (starscapefestival.com). And that’s just in the states. There are so many ones in Europe, anything with Sensations Entertainment.

OMFC: What was one of your memorable shows?

Epps: All the bad experiences I have ever had were with amp blow outs, they always seem to melt. Except one time with a huge subwoofer. They had to shut me down because I caught that shit on fire!
