Summer Camp Grounds

For many Midwestern music-lovers, revelers, ravers, ragers, and general fun-seekers, Summer Camp Music Festival in Chillicothe, Illinois (May 25-27) serves as the major kick-off to a season packed with the wide array of concerts, music/art festivals, and outdoor street fairs that materialize for a few fleeting, summery months in our nation’s “Heartland”. 2012 marks the twelfth incarnation of Summer Camp (“Scamp” to those in the know), with this year’s lineup boasting cream-of-the-crop acts from a broad spectrum of musical genres. From progressive rock to experimental jazz, bluegrass to dubstep, hard electro to hip-hop, jam band to brass band, Summer Camp Music Festival 2012 offers the opportunity for members of the Midwest scene and beyond to unite under the banner of top-quality tunes from a plethora of sonic flavors.

Summer Camp Headliners-Moe

Jam scene heavyweights Umphrey’s McGee (Chicago) and Moe. (New York) have long been the featured headliners of Summer Camp, with both bands rocking 3 sets each over the course of the weekend. Special guests and superstar-studded jams are de rigueur at each band’s performances, which consistently provide some of the weekend’s most spectacular moments. Umphrey’s and Moe. are joined as headliners by alternative rock icons Jane’s Addiction, the ever mind-blowing Primus, Colorado-based EDM guru Pretty Lights, conscious hip-hop innovator, Common, and the acoustic supergroup trio of Bob Weir (the Grateful Dead), Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes), and Jackie Greene. Summer Camp Headliners-Umphrey's McGee

In anticipation of this year’s Summer Camp Music Festival, OMFC spoke with festival coordinator Holly Brinkman to give this year’s crop of Campers the heads up and lowdown scoop of what to expect at Summer Camp 2012.

OMFC: What sets Summer Camp apart from other major festivals?

Brinkman: Our community of fans, and our commitment to them. It truly is a family, and it stays that way, even as we grow each year.

OMFC: What is Summer Camp’s vision in terms of throwing a great festival?

Brinkman: We strive to offer something for everyone, to give festival-goers the chance to see that huge Artist that everyone’s been talking about, but also to turn them on to local, smaller acts they may have never heard of before. We want them to have the opportunity to interact with the artists through our musician workshops and activities in our Make A Difference area, and to offer them an enhanced experience year after year to keep them excited about the festival year-round.

 OMFC: Summer Camp provides many ways to give back to the community. What is your favorite Summer Camp Community Initiative that the festival is involved in? 

Brinkman: We have so many throughout the year that it’s hard to choose just one. This year we have been able to host drives year round at shows and also will host a variety of drives at the festival itself. These allow us to give back to the variety of charities we support and help to raise awareness about their initiatives.

OMFC: What are some of the biggest challenges you face?

Brinkman: Last year was our largest and arguably best festival to date, making sure we kick things up a notch in all capacities is always a challenge! No one could have foreseen the damage last year’s weather (a massive thunderstorm hit the grounds the day before the festival began) caused the grounds and subsequently the festival. We have done everything in our power to learn from last year’s challenges and anticipate as much as we possibly can. With an outdoor, rain or shine event, that’s really all we can do. That, and keep wishing for sunshine!

OMFC: What can Campers expect this summer? Any changes they should be aware of?

Brinkman: We have a lot of diversity this year with our lineup, and I’m excited to see if that influences the diversity of our festival-goers as well. Either way, it’s going to be a party! We are also adding a lot of new ways to keep festival-goers informed this year by building information boards that will be at both general stores and at the VIP bar, additionally, we will be encouraging attendants to sign up for our text alert system.

OMFC: Which performances are you most looking forward to?

Brinkman: I personally can’t wait to see Common and Jane’s Addiction. (Author’s note: Same!)

OMFC: Any advice for first-time Campers?

Brinkman: Make sure to pack for the weather, remember to stay hydrated, and get ready to have the time of your life!

Based of the success of last year’s Groupon Silent Disco Tent, we are proud to announce Groupon Silent Disco Dome for the 2012 edition of North Coast Music Festival! The dome will feature a rotating line up of DJs throughout the festival, mixing a wide variety of genres of electronic music for up to 200 people at a time. There may even be some surprises amongst the DJs spinning!

As always, a portion of our proceeds will be donated to the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago.
