INTRODUCTION AND EDITING BY J.WARNER

Po' Brothers Band

The Po’ Brothers are a four-piece indie rock band out of Floyd’s Knob, IN, consisting of Collin Curry on guitar/vocals, Cody Plaiss (lead guitar), Ryan Thompson (Bass), and Jake Naville (Drums). They bring a positive, high-energy vibe to their art, and are quickly making a name for themselves in their local scene. OMFC was privileged to pick the minds of these young up and comers.

OMFC: How did the Po’ Brothers get their start?

PB: A party was being put on in late October of 2010 called Rocktober Fest. Collin, the singer, knew each of the members who would eventually form the band, and knew each played their respective instruments. He approached each of us and asked us to come play with him. The party was on a Friday, we started learning six cliché covers that we would play two days later. Ryan, the bassist, almost bailed because he did not feel that it was going anywhere. All agreed to play the party but weren’t really planning on much more. Before anyone knew it, we were playing on a disciplined schedule three to four nights a week and eventually began writing our own music. Now we are releasing our first album in less than a year of existence and having this interview with you.

OMFC: How did the Po’ Brother’s find their name?

PB: I’m Jacob, the drummer, and I guess I am responsible for the name. I moved into a rental house after high school, and needless to say, didn’t have much. After making a trip to the Dollar Store, I picked up some “Poor Brother” chips. Later that night my friends were making fun of my house only consisting of two beanbag chairs and a TV. So I responded to them while eating the chips, “I can’t help it, I’m a po’ brother”. The saying stuck with our group of friends and after forming the band, we all felt it fit as well. We don’t have much but we always try to do good and have fun!

OMFC: How would you describe your sound?

PB: We didn’t shoot for any specific sound. Each one of our songs came about by jamming it out. If it sounded good, it sounded good. We weren’t trying to pigeon-hole to a specific genre. We all love so many different types of music that it is pretty easy for us all to agree on a good sound. Our biggest accomplishment as a band was starting the band with four musicians that were not fundamentally solid on any of our instruments and nine months later developing, recording, and producing a full length album that we are all very proud of.

OMFC: What is the biggest obstacle you have encountered as a relatively inexperienced group?

PB: The most difficult thing we have dealt with is trying to create something by putting four completely different personalities together. Learning to operate as a unit while being aware of how each individual operates is a difficult thing. Each person in the band plays a role and it was hard at times to know which role each member was going to be playing.

OMFC: Why are you driven to be a musical artist?

PB: We do what we do because it just makes sense. It feels right. Being a positive influence on anyone’s life is important and we feel that music is a big way we can make a difference. We hope that one thing people can take out of our music is a positive feeling. That feeling is why we do what we do. We would like to see a more positive light be shown throughout the world. Just watching the news you see nothing but negativity. Even the music that’s out there can be extremely negative. If the media and entertainers focused on the good, they could make a positive impact, which is the whole goal of our band.

OMFC: What is the next big thing we can expect from the Po’ Brothers?

PB: Shining lights, hot tubs, caviar, G5s, backrubs from Megan Fox…just kidding. We don’t know what the future holds but we’re going to keep on doing what we’re doing and reaching for the stars.
